Learning has never been so easy!

Since I wanted to perform an actual migration to Windows 7 *before* I try to do it at work, I decided to give it a go on my home computer.

This computer is a Dell XPS M1530 laptop and was shipped with Windows Vista Ultimate 32bits. Since this computer is 64bits capable, has 4Gb of RAM and is used almost exclusively on a home network, I chose Windows 7 Home Premium x64.

Because I chose to switch architecture and I chose a lower edition, I had no choice but perform a clean install instead of an upgrade (note that I would have perform a clean install anyways).

Installation was straight forward. Almost everything worked out of the box. I had to find a few drivers, but everything was easy to find and now every thing works perfectly.

3 Steps total

Step 1: Install Windows 7

Boot from the cd-rom drive and perform a custom Windows 7 installation.

Step 2: Disable writing cache on the Segate hard drive

This step is necessary only if your M1530 is equiped with the Seagate hard drive.

M1530

On Vista, writing cache isn't activated for the drive, but it is on 7. It seems the drive doesn't support this well and slows down the computer (performance rating is even terribly low).

After disabling the writing cache, the performance is back to what it is supposed.

(once the writing cache is disabled on the drive, you can't re-enable it - windows now stating the drive doesn't support the feature).

Step 3: Download and install missing drivers

I downloaded the following drivers:
- video drivers directly from nVidia
- all the other drivers from Dell web site.

Since Dell doesn't give Windows 7 drivers for this model, I downloaded drivers and applications for Vista x64.

Installation of Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on this laptop is pretty straight forward. After running the laptop on 7 for two weeks now, everything seems to work perfectly fine.

This how-to was for Home Premium, but there should be no difference for the other Windows 7 editions. Should also work for 32bits edition of Windows 7 (just download 32bits drivers instead of x64).

Hope this helps!
